What range of courses are available to deaf learners?
In terms of the Disability Discrimination Act deaf learners can access all or the majority of courses at College.
There may be elements of a course which pose more difficulty for deaf learners e.g. sound modules as part of a television production course.
If the elements of a course that pose a problem for a deaf person are numerous or are a core component of the course, careful consideration is necessary to determine whether this course is the best or most appropriate choice.
It is possible that a full qualification (NC, HNC/D) may not be achieved if one or more core units are not completed. The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is the examining body responsible for setting standards for many of the courses taught in Scottish Colleges (see assessment.)

Are there courses on offer tailored specifically for deaf people?
Some Colleges provide courses tailored specifically for deaf learners. This type of provision might include the following type of courses:
- School Link courses (in College 1 day per week or more while at school)
- Access courses
- Part-time courses
- Full-time courses
- Day-release courses
- Evening and Leisure classes
Courses may be offered to deaf learners specifically in the following subject areas:
Deaf Studies:
- BSL Level 1
- BSL Level 2
- Communication Tactics
- Community and Culture
- Deaf Awareness
- Work Related Sign Language
Or:
- Literacy and Numeracy
- IT
- Leisure classes which cover a vast range of possible subjects
Sometimes Colleges work in partnership with deaf organisations to provide courses. Courses may be led by deaf or hearing tutors using sign language interpreters if needed.
Depending on your area, local deaf organisations may offer more courses for deaf people only than the College or Colleges in the area.
