Speech and Language Therapy (SLT)Speech and Language therapy input for students is provided by the SLT adult services of the local Health Trust. Different Health Trusts have different levels of SLT allocation for Further and Higher education students. Many deaf students will have been known to the SLT departments as children and most students will not qualify for ongoing direct therapy at this stage of their education, although some SLT departments will be happy to offer advice on supporting the communication needs of particular students even if no direct therapy is available. All SLT departments operate a system of open referral and staff can refer students for assessment of their English skills if required. Most SLT departments do not offer assessment or therapy for students who communicate using BSL. |
